May 17, 2017 – His Holiness the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje arrived in central London for his first ever visit to the United Kingdom. The Karmapa was formally met by three senior Rinpoche’s, Chime Rinpoche, Ato Rinpoche and Lama Yeshe Losal Rinpoche, residents of the UK. Ringu Tulku, the head of the Karmapa Foundation Europe and the 17th Karmapa’s representative in Europe along with devotees, and the local Tibetan community delightfully greeted the Karmapa by offering katas upon his arrival at the hotel. He was then welcomed with a reception of a traditional English afternoon tea.
In a video recorded by His Holiness, His Holiness expressed his aspiration between him and Britain about his upcoming first visit to the UK. He has had a strong dharma connection with Britain since the time of the 16th Karmapa, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje’s first European tour back in 1974. As the earth is getting smaller and smaller, he hopes and prays that through this opportunity, His Holiness and Britain can feel closer, develop a better connection and feel more interconnected with one another.
His Holiness is anticipated to be spending the next ten days in UK giving teachings and empowerments. On Saturday May 20 and Sunday May 21, the Karmapa will be teaching at the Battersea Evolution on the 8 Verses For Training the Mind concluding with a Chenrezig Empowerment. Then before making his way to Canada, on the following Saturday, May 27, he will bestow a Long Life Empowerment at Lakeside International Hotel. His Holiness’ first visit to the United Kingdom will conclude on May 29 where he will then fly from London to Toronto to continue his tour with Vancouver being his final destination.
